Ranking 6-9 on Google with almost zero clicks: what am I missing?
I run a small side project, a tarot site with card meanings and readings in four languages (React and Supabase, prerendered pages). Indexing is fine: 354 pages in Google, nothing stuck in "discovered, not indexed".
In mid September one of the language versions jumped from average position 27 to 6.3. The card pages now sit in the top 10 for queries like "three of wands meaning", and the page titles match those queries word for word.
Result: about 2600 impressions and 2 clicks. CTR 0.08%. From public CTR studies like the one by Advanced Web Ranking I expected something around 1-2% for positions 6-9 on mobile, and mobile is 83% of my traffic. Branded searches work fine (8.5% CTR), so people do click when they look for the site by name.
What I checked
Site Audit health 100, TTFB around 130 ms, schema in place (Article, Breadcrumb, FAQ, WebSite).
Suspects
My main suspect is the AI overview. Pew Research found that people clicked a result in 8% of visits when an AI summary appeared, against 15% without one, and Ahrefs measured a 34.5% drop in clicks. The image pack above the results probably adds to it.
The other suspect is my own snippet: on 21 Sept I rewrote 78 descriptions following Google's guide and will compare in two weeks.
Still, a tenfold gap feels like more than AI overviews alone. Has anyone seen a site stuck in the top 10 with CTR this low? What turned out to be the cause?
The site is tarot-magic.com if you want to look at the snippets yourself.
